Abstract

What defines “the contemporary” in contemporary art museums? What criteria do curators consider when selecting works for a given collection? How do contemporary exhibitions engage with the issues of their time? What takes precedence when certain interventions are carried out over others? How do contemporary art museums survive in a context of severe budget cuts and massive defunding of science, art, and culture? Radical Museology. Or, What Is Contemporary in Museums of Contemporary Art? by historian and art critic Claire Bishop explores these and other questions in a critical and irreverent manner, questioning the relationship between art, the market, and capital in contemporary art museums, as well as the ways in which these institutions constitute themselves as spaces for historical, political, and social construction.
