Towards a Metamodern Perspective on Film Analysis and Interpretation: A Methodological Proposal

Abstract

This paper presents a metamodern methodology for film analysis and interpretation, emphasizing hybridity, provisionality, and interdisciplinarity. It identifies interpretive levels ranging from objective analysis (Level 0) to subjective or ideological uses of film (Level 4). Drawing on Umberto Eco’s criteria–coherence, causality, and internal consistency–the article defends the need to validate interpretations rigorously. The proposed approach avoids both methodological dogmatism and postmodern relativism, aiming to balance interpretive creativity with analytical precision. The resulting topographical model offers a flexible yet demanding tool for assessing cinematic readings within a complex and evolving epistemological framework.
